SPOTLIGHT ATHLETE – JESSICA HUGHES

Jess is a 6am faithful who shows up (consistently!) works hard and never complains, we are so lucky to have her at Cynergy. Don’t try to beat her off the rower- she’ll always win!

What do you do for work?
For the past 7 years I have been fortunate enough to be home taking care of my two kiddos. Full time mom life 🙂
What would you like us to know about you and your family?
Rob and I have been married for 9 years, and have been in Halifax for the past 7 years. We have two wonderful boys, Bear (7) and Teddy (5) who keep me going.
What is one thing that we may not know about you?
Summer is my season. I thrive off the warmth, the beach, and being outside in the garden or swimming! I’ll take dripping sweat WODs over shivering for a warm up all day long.
How long have you been CrossFitting?
I have been doing CrossFit type training for 10ish years. Some of that time has been in a box, some in a home gym! I did take some time off between having the kids, and have been back full time for over 3 years now.
What time do you typically train?
Shout out to the 6am crew!
What is your favorite lift and why?
Love the classic brute strength of a classic deadlift! Nothing makes me feel stronger or more of a badass than ripping some heavy weights off the ground.
What is your favorite WOD and why?
I don’t have one that jumps out at me as a favorite. I do enjoy the longer WODs that push you to pace while staying consistently moving (bonus points if there’s a barbell in the mix!).
What are your current life goals?
To figure out what I want to be when I grow up. In all seriousness I’ve been raising two wild boys for 7 years, and this fall they will both be in school full time. So I get to reflect on my interests and growth over the years and figure out what I would like to do in this next chapter.
What is your most memorable time as a CrossFitter?
Coming back to CrossFit after some time off, and being humbled very quickly. I remember the first WOD back it was so hot and we were running and there were some pushups along with other movements. Coming in each round questioning myself, seeing stars, pushups on my knees to failure, and wanting to quit. Digging down to remind myself that it takes time and to trust the process was so hard. It serves as a great reminder that this stuff is hard, and just showing up and doing it at whatever level is extraordinary.
How has CF impacted your life outside of the box?
CrossFit has impacted me in many ways. The friendships I have formed over the years are so meaningful. To have like minded individuals focused on bettering themselves is inspiring. Also, it brings me confidence in how strong I am and what I am capable of. Being able to set a positive example about a healthy lifestyle for my boys is just the icing on the cake.
Any additional comments:
Thank you all for being such a welcoming and amazing community. I love starting my day with the 6am crew and gauging how bad it is by how many people are laying on the floor recovering. So grateful for encouragement, laughs, friendships, and fitness!
