MARK DODGE – Spotlight Athlete

Mark was an easy choice for this month’s member spotlight for a variety of reasons.  The most apparent to any member who is in attendance of a class with him is how supportive and encouraging he is to other athletes.  If you have never met him but took a class with him, he is the guy going around fist bumping every athlete with words of encouragement after each workout.  What many athletes that take classes with Mark may not see is his devotion to CrossFit and self-improvement.  He can often be found after class working on various skills, working extra mobility, doing accessory work and spending time with other athletes getting to know them a little better.  Mark is the ideal athlete for any gym, we are fortunate to have him at Cynergy.  Congrats, Mark on your long overdue nomination!

What do you do for work?
I’m a clinical research coordinator for the Center for Regenerative Medicine at Boston Medical
Center. I also work as a nurse tech at South Shore Hospital.

What would you like us to know about you and your family?
Cynergy has completely changed our lives, all for the better. Our family eats healthier foods,
prioritizes sleep, works out and stays active and overall, we live healthier lives now because of
the Cynergy community.

What is one thing that we may not know about you?
I was beyond scared to try CrossFit and have eyed that tire for years waiting to get the courage
to try Cynergy out. I’m so glad I finally did!

How long have you been CrossFitting?
Little less than a year.

What time do you typically train?
9am, but I will go to 6am or 5:15pm if my work schedule allows it.

What is your favorite lift and why?
The power clean – something about combining overall strength and skill has made me really
enjoy this lift.

What is your favorite WOD and why?
My favorite WOD we have done so far has to be Murph. I love running and I’m typically better at
body weight movements. It was awesome doing a physically and mentally tough WOD all
together with the community.

What are your current CF goals?
To work on my strength and to work on some high level skill gymnastic movements (bar/ring)

What are your current life goals?
I’m currently applying to Physician Assistant school and hope to work as an emergency
medicine physician assistant in the future.

What is your most memorable time as a CrossFitter?

When Cindy wouldn’t take no for an answer and pushed me out of my comfort level to kick up
on the wall. I was always so scared to try to kick up or even do a handstand hold. Now, I can do
a strict handstand push-up – something I thought I’d never be able to do.

How has CF impacted your life outside of the box?
Cynergy has given me so much mental confidence that I use in my everyday life. We do hard
things every day at Cynergy, which makes attacking everyday challenges outside the box much
easier.

How would you best describe Cynergy to others?
Community fitness that will keep you coming back for more.

Any additional comments:
I want to say thank you to Cindy, Charlene, all the coaches and Cynergy community for all the
help and support, in and outside the gym. I’m proud to be part of such an amazing community!
