Member Spotlight: Jackie Canapino

Cynergy CrossFit’s Member Spotlight for October is Jackie Canapino

What do you do for work?
I am an interior designer. I work for a commercial furniture dealer (Creative Office Pavilion). I spend my days working in AutoCAD to draw plans and specify products for offices. I am lucky enough to work from home full time helping to support our NYC team.

What would you like us to know about you and your family?
My husband, Frank, and I have been married for three years. Back in December we moved to Halifax (my hometown) where we built our house across the street from my family. We have two adorable dogs and one cat.

What is one thing that we may not know about you.
I hate to cook. Frank does all the cooking in our house. I bake, but cooking is not for me!

How long have you been CrossFitting?
It’s been just over two years since I started at QCCF, and I have been at Cynergy since December.

What time do you typically train?
5:30pm (Very much not a morning person and when I do drag myself in on the weekends, it’s not pretty)

What is your favorite lift and why?
Deadlifts and Cleans. These are the movements I feel most comfortable with.

What is your favorite WOD and why?
I don’t have a particular favorite, basically as long as there are no burpees, I’m good 🙂

What are your current CF goals?
Kipping is something that continues to elude me, I would really like to get kipping pull-ups. Double unders too 🙂

What are your current life goals?
Right now it’s getting everything wrapped up with the new house so that we can settle in and be done with construction for…I don’t know…forever?

What is your most memorable time as a CrossFitter?
I would have to say doing Murph for the first time, 2 years ago I would never have imagined ever being able to come close to completing it, let alone doing it RX.

How has CF impacted your life outside of the box?
Between doing CF and the TCL program I have gotten in the best shape of my life. I feel strong and confident which is amazing!

How would you best describe Cynergy to others?
The very best thing about Cynergy is it’s members. Everyone is so supportive and willing to cheer you on. Makes it so much easier to workout when you are surrounded by friendly faces that want you to succeed as much as you do 🙂

Any additional comments:
I have never considered myself athletic. I never was good at sticking to a workout routine. I have had countless under-used gym memberships. CrossFit is the only thing I have managed to stick with, and most of that is due to the amazing coaches at both QCCF and Cynergy (thanks for putting up with me! :)). For anyone that thinks they can’t do CrossFit, you should have met me before I started, I never thought I could either. I have come such a long way since I started, and I know that I have MANY things to improve on, but I love feeling proud of myself when I hit a new PR or when I complete a workout!

August Member Spotlight — Frank Canapino

This month’s Member Spotlight is on Frank Canapino. Frank typically trains in the evening (4 or 5:30) and has been CrossFtting for about a year and a half now and continues to push himself and make gains. I’m a huge gamer. Half of our basement is a gaming room devoted to video games, board games, and miniatures.

How long have you been CrossFitting?

I started in February 2016. My first real week after doing foundations in Quincy was 16.1.

What time do you typically train?

I try to make it to the 4PM Class M-F.

Probably Cleans.

What are your current life goals?

Enjoy my new house. Spend as much time as I can with my family. Lose more body fat %.

What is your most memorable time as a CrossFitter?

Most recently it would be getting my first muscle-up. It was super exciting to get up there.

What do you do for work?

I am a Branch Manager for Rockland Trust Company, I have been with the bank for 22 years!

What would you like us to know about you and your family?

What is one thing that we may not know about you.

How long have you been CrossFitting?

I started 4 years ago in Boot Camp and at the end of the summer officially started CrossFit (it took me the whole summer to build up the courage to make the leap!)

What time do you typically train?

6:30 (ish!) 😉

What is your favorite lift and why?

Deadlifts. It’s the lift I challenge myself with going heavy.

What is your favorite WOD and why?

The 9/11 workout was my first WOD and as challenging as it was physically, I felt like it was a great way to honor all those that were lost that day. I make sure I do that WOD every year.

What are your current CF goals?

I really want to get handstand walks on the floor (rather than just to the wall – my safety net)

What are your current life goals?

Right now I am just looking forward to enjoying the summer! I am trying to live more in the moment and not over plan everything 🙂

What is your most memorable time as a CrossFitter?

When I finally got my pull ups – it took me FOREVER! And finally, doing Murph this year was a big deal for me.

How has CF impacted your life outside of the box?

I am so much stronger not just physically, but mentally. I take on way more challenges now!

How would you best describe Cynergy to others?

It’s my happy place. No matter how bad my day was I always feel great when I leave. The other athletes are so supportive and the coaches are all AWESOME! All of the coaches have full time “day” jobs yet they find a way to bring energy and get us through some really tough workouts. I have learned so much from every single one of them – so THANK YOU!

June Athlete of the Month – Russell Monroe

June Athlete of the Month is Russ! Congratulations, Russ!

I picked Russ for AOM for several reasons.
He only missed class when he has military leave no other reason.
He never cherry picks work outs.
Russ never complains about the workout even if it’s not his favorite lift. If he’s having a bad day, no one would have guessed. He always laughs and smiles and brings happiness to his fellow athletes.
Russ wears a weight vest for some workouts and even does post runs with it. He wants to improve his strength as his well being
He has really kicked it up a notch the last few months and it shows. When someone is in a good place they bring positive vibes to the gym.
I look forward to seeing what else Russ will bring to the table. He’s a pleasure to coach.

Coach Suzie Llewellyn

Cynergy Kids Spotlight Athlete, Mia!

Congratulations to Mia for being selected as our current young Spotlight Athlete in the Cynergy Kids program!
Mia is such a sweet girl.  She has been a member of Cynergy Kids since mid-September of 2016 and has been a role model to all of the kids in our program.  Mia is always kind to fellow athletes and she is always very respectful to her coaches.  Mia always asks how she can lend a helping hand, whether it be helping to set up for a warm-up, workout, or game, or helping friends clean up equipment after working out.  If there’s a movement in the workout that Mia is generally uncomfortable with, she makes it a point to talk to her coaches beforehand, figuring out a plan to work her way through it.  She’s determined!  Since day one, Mia has been wanting to work on her grip strength for help with pull-ups and rope swings/climbs.  She has built up her grip strength tremendously and continues to work at it, always with a smile!

Mia’s favorite workouts are team workouts which doesn’t surprise me because she works so well with others.  Her ideal workout would be a team WOD involving rowing and KB Swings.  When asked what she likes best about the Cynergy Kids program, she said, “It’s super fun and I like all of the kids.  They’re super nice!”

It has been such a pleasure coaching Mia these last seven and a half months.  She is well-deserving of being in the Spotlight!  Congratulations, Mia!!  🙂
