Member Spotlight: Kelly Woerdeman

Congratulations to Kelly Woerdeman, Cynergy CrossFit’s Spotlight Member!

What do you do for work?
I am an independent financial planner and Army Reserve Instructor. I love both of these jobs and look forward doing them each day.

What would you like us to know about you and your family?
My wife Michelle and I live in Hanson with our Daughter, Elizabeth (7) Son, Jack (4), our Dog, Patton and Cat, Joey

What is one thing that we may not know about you.
This is my rookie year at Cynergy so there are lots of things. Let’s go with I’ve been in the Army for over 19 years, 2 activations, 1 Iraq deployment, and I am very close to retirement.

How long have you been CrossFitting?
I am 3 months in now.

What time do you typically train?
All over the map…5am, 6am, 9am 4pm

What is your favorite lift and why?
Thrusters…It seems to me like everything is working at once with that lift.

What is your favorite WOD and why?
Anything involving running….I have a distance running background.

What are your current CF goals?
I am struggling with double unders and HSPU’s. I am working to fix that currently. Also I am looking forward to the “Murph” I would like to perform well during that WOD.

What are your current life goals?
So much going on here… Continue spending as much time as possible with my wife and kids. Looking forward to retiring from the military and would love to start coaching my kids in their sports. Would like to teach some college courses in basic finance.

What is your most memorable time as a CrossFitter?
I would say my first few days at Cynergy was the most memorable. Everyone was very welcoming and awesome
and I knew I made a great decision to join up.

How has CF impacted your life outside of the box?
My energy level has gone through roof!

How would you best describe Cynergy to others?
The members are awesome. You show up, the workouts are pre-planned so you don’t have to think about it. You don’t need to wait for gym equipment to get freed up. You end up pushing yourself beyond what you would do on your own at the gym. It is also very close to my military training as far as instructor led group training.

Any additional comments:
Instead of making excuses on why I can’t go to the gym, I now have the discipline and motivation to make it in as many days as possible. I have a lot to learn and a long way to go but I am certain I found the place to do it. Thank you to all the coaches and members for everything so far. Let’s get some!

Member Spotlight: Jackie Canapino

Cynergy CrossFit’s Member Spotlight for October is Jackie Canapino

What do you do for work?
I am an interior designer. I work for a commercial furniture dealer (Creative Office Pavilion). I spend my days working in AutoCAD to draw plans and specify products for offices. I am lucky enough to work from home full time helping to support our NYC team.

What would you like us to know about you and your family?
My husband, Frank, and I have been married for three years. Back in December we moved to Halifax (my hometown) where we built our house across the street from my family. We have two adorable dogs and one cat.

What is one thing that we may not know about you.
I hate to cook. Frank does all the cooking in our house. I bake, but cooking is not for me!

How long have you been CrossFitting?
It’s been just over two years since I started at QCCF, and I have been at Cynergy since December.

What time do you typically train?
5:30pm (Very much not a morning person and when I do drag myself in on the weekends, it’s not pretty)

What is your favorite lift and why?
Deadlifts and Cleans. These are the movements I feel most comfortable with.

What is your favorite WOD and why?
I don’t have a particular favorite, basically as long as there are no burpees, I’m good πŸ™‚

What are your current CF goals?
Kipping is something that continues to elude me, I would really like to get kipping pull-ups. Double unders too πŸ™‚

What are your current life goals?
Right now it’s getting everything wrapped up with the new house so that we can settle in and be done with construction for…I don’t know…forever?

What is your most memorable time as a CrossFitter?
I would have to say doing Murph for the first time, 2 years ago I would never have imagined ever being able to come close to completing it, let alone doing it RX.

How has CF impacted your life outside of the box?
Between doing CF and the TCL program I have gotten in the best shape of my life. I feel strong and confident which is amazing!

How would you best describe Cynergy to others?
The very best thing about Cynergy is it’s members. Everyone is so supportive and willing to cheer you on. Makes it so much easier to workout when you are surrounded by friendly faces that want you to succeed as much as you do πŸ™‚

Any additional comments:
I have never considered myself athletic. I never was good at sticking to a workout routine. I have had countless under-used gym memberships. CrossFit is the only thing I have managed to stick with, and most of that is due to the amazing coaches at both QCCF and Cynergy (thanks for putting up with me! :)). For anyone that thinks they can’t do CrossFit, you should have met me before I started, I never thought I could either. I have come such a long way since I started, and I know that I have MANY things to improve on, but I love feeling proud of myself when I hit a new PR or when I complete a workout!

What is your favorite lift and why?

Deadlifts. It’s the lift I challenge myself with going heavy.

What is your favorite WOD and why?

The 9/11 workout was my first WOD and as challenging as it was physically, I felt like it was a great way to honor all those that were lost that day. I make sure I do that WOD every year.

What are your current CF goals?

I really want to get handstand walks on the floor (rather than just to the wall – my safety net)

What are your current life goals?

How would you best describe Cynergy to others?

It’s my happy place. No matter how bad my day was I always feel great when I leave. The other athletes are so supportive and the coaches are all AWESOME! All of the coaches have full time β€œday” jobs yet they find a way to bring energy and get us through some really tough workouts. I have learned so much from every single one of them – so THANK YOU!

June Athlete of the Month – Russell Monroe

June Athlete of the Month is Russ! Congratulations, Russ!

I picked Russ for AOM for several reasons.
He only missed class when he has military leave no other reason.
He never cherry picks work outs.
Russ never complains about the workout even if it’s not his favorite lift. If he’s having a bad day, no one would have guessed. He always laughs and smiles and brings happiness to his fellow athletes.
Russ wears a weight vest for some workouts and even does post runs with it. He wants to improve his strength as his well being
He has really kicked it up a notch the last few months and it shows. When someone is in a good place they bring positive vibes to the gym.
I look forward to seeing what else Russ will bring to the table. He’s a pleasure to coach.

Coach Suzie Llewellyn
